Computer software means a gathering of different computer programs, applications and procedures within the same unit. All these elements perform an inevitable role in the proper functioning of the computer. There are several kinds of computer software. There are application software that deals with the word processor of the computer (where user can produce something). There are system software which are associated with the operating system of the computer and at last, there are programming software with the help of which different programs and program languages can be installed in the personal computer.
Normally, it is considered as the completely opposite of the computer hardware. But they share some important and unbreakable relationship. Hardware of the computer is said to operate the physical interconnections of the computer and the additional accessories whereas system software is loaded into the memory of the computer and functions in the CPU. Software produces the instructions that are able to change the physical state of the computer. So, we can not say that it is not related to the hardware of the computer.
So, we can say that it helps in the smooth running of hardware and system of the computer. It includes window systems, servers, device drivers and other devices in it. Its main purpose is to familiarize the user with the complex programming of the computer. Especially, the hardware features like printers, displays etc that may vary from computer to computer.
Some of the qualities that should be possessed by all system software are discussed ahead. First of all, it must have a high understandability factor. The designs of the documentation of the product must be easy enough of understand by the user. It should possess all the information about the various applications and the computer hardware up to the extent of completeness. Excessive information should be deleted from it as it can make the user thinking out of track.
Portability of the system software is also an important point to be included by each one. It should be easy to operate on the various computer configurations. Efficiency of the software should also be good so that there is the minimized wastage of computer resources and information. And at last, the most important characteristic of system software is that it must be able to protect the data of the computer against the illegal accession and foreign interference.
These were some characteristics of the system software that must be well inspected before going for them.
